Today, the Water Quality &
Health Council (WQ&HC), an independent, multidisciplinary group sponsored
by the Chlorine Chemistry Division of the American Chemistry Council,
announces the launch of a website dedicated to educating the public on flu
prevention. Developed with the support of the National Consumers League,
the site highlights simple steps to help reduce the risk of contracting the
seasonal flu, which causes more than 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000
deaths in the U.S. each year.
Under the banner of "We All Can Help Prevent the Flu", the WQ&HC site
emphasizes the importance of yearly vaccinations, frequent hand washing and
other personal hygiene measures, as well as limiting cross infection if one
does become ill. Since household surfaces such as doorknobs, counters,
table tops, handles and switches can be "hot spots" for germs, the WQ&HC
also recommends disinfecting frequently-used surfaces with a diluted
chlorine bleach solution or disinfectant wipes. By taking steps to prevent
transmission of the flu virus, everyone can participate in protecting the
health of their families and their communities.
Additionally, the site includes preparedness resources for a potential
influenza pandemic -- a global infectious disease outbreak that can occur
when a flu virus new to human immune systems emerges, spreading easily from
person-to-person. Such an outbreak could overwhelm healthcare facilities,
emergency medical services and other community infrastructure. To help
individuals and families plan for an extended period of "social
distancing", the WQ&HC developed Dr. Ralph's Preparedness Closet, a
family-friendly checklist of household items needed in the event of a flu
pandemic. Necessary items include a supply of stored food and drinking
water, first aid supplies, personal hygiene products and disinfecting
chlorine bleach. The checklist is named for WQ&HC member Dr. Ralph Morris,
M.D., M.P.H., a public health preparedness consultant for the Minnesota
Department of Health.

The WQ&HC is a body of independent scientific experts, health
professionals and consumer advocates sponsored by the ACC's Chlorine
Chemistry Division. WQ&HC members seek to provide the public health
community, the media and the general public with a greater understanding of
issues such as safe drinking water, wastewater, recreational waters and
food safety.
