As of September 2009 Professor Tim Evans is the new Academic Vice-President of the Royal College of Physicians. In addition to being Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at Imperial College and a Consultant in Intensive Care & Thoracic Medicine at the Royal Brompton, he also occupies senior management roles at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust. Prof. Evans has formerly served as a Censor and Academic Registrar within the College.
The Academic-Vice President is a new senior role within the College, established to emphasise the importance of academic medicine, which includes teaching and research activity. The office holder will be responsible to the College President and Council for supporting the development of research activity in medicine generally; the development of College policy and activity relating to academic medicine, and the development of related career pathways; and the educational activities of the College relating to conferences, seminars, lectures and clinical research fellowships and awards.
On assuming his responsibilities, Prof Evans said:
"I am delighted to have this opportunity to help secure a climate in which research active physicians in the NHS, and academic medicine more generally can flourish."
