Impulse Monitoring, Inc. (IMI), a leading provider of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) services to hospitals, announced that it has acquired the assets of Great Lakes Intraoperative Monitoring, LP (GLIM), a subsidiary of Williamsville, NY-based Archer Medical Diagnostic Testing, Inc. Founded in 2004, GLIM currently provides IONM services to 14 hospitals in the western New York area, including Buffalo and Rochester. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

IONM assesses neurological function involving the brain, spinal cord and related nerve structures during such surgeries. Use of IONM facilitates the surgical process and can reduce surgical risk by providing alerts to surgeons of potential harm to the spinal cord or neural structures. Under the Impulse Monitoring model, neurophysiologists located in the operating room work in partnership with supervising physicians who oversee the interpretation of neurophysiologic data gathered via real-time broadband transmission.

"This acquisition comes on the heels of our adding several major client facilities in the Syracuse area over the last 12 months," said IMI President and CEO, Gene Cattarina. "Now, with Great Lakes, we have established a significant presence we can continue to develop in the important western New York region." Cattarina stated that Great Lakes delivers its services via two main business models: outsourcing and in-service. The outsourced model is very similar to IMI's approach, featuring real-time physician oversight of on-site neurophysiologists. For the in-service model GLIM provides the neuromonitoring oversight and infrastructure, while the hospital provides the technologists. Both delivery methods are highly compatible with IMI's service model, which will allow a rapid integration of GLIM into the IMI organization.

"These similar methodologies, combined with IMI's powerful and unique IT infrastructure, will allow us to smoothly leverage the synergies of this acquisition to quickly continue our aggressive growth strategy," added Cattarina.
